'Bohemian Rhapsody' back in charts

Vodafone has taken credit for pushing the Queen hit "Bohemian Rhapsody" back into the Irish charts.
"The surprising reappearance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the new top 20 official IRMA/Chart Track report last week displayed a significant shift in the choice available to music lovers and the influence this has had on the overall shape of the charts," Vodafone said today.
"Vodafone was responsible for 85 per cent of the sales of the track, catapulting it back into the top 20 for the first time since 1991."
Some 40 per cent of the new Irish top 40 singles are downloaded by customers of Vodafone's "live" service, the company has claimed.
Recent figures reveal that digital downloads now account for 56 per cent of the top 40 singles since the introduction of the new combined Irish singles chart on 1st January 2007.
Over 650,000 full tracks were downloaded last year, and the most popular was Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie", the mobile group said.

Queen guitarist May's long career

Queen guitarist Brian May's CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, recognising his services to music, is another landmark in a career spanning four decades.
With the hugely successful rock band Queen, May enjoyed huge worldwide success.
Born in Twickenham, Middlesex, in 1947, astronomy student May formed Queen with drummer Roger Taylor in the early 1970s.
They recruited flamboyant singer Freddie Mercury and bass player John Deacon.

Queen's powerful glam rock sound - including May's distinctive guitar solos - and Mercury's camp theatrics meant they soon enjoyed a couple of top 10 hits and established a strong live following.
Their innovative seven-minute "mini opera" single Bohemian Rhapsody elevated them to the stadium concert league.
Released in 1975 and again in 1991, the single spent a total of 14 weeks at number one in the UK charts.
In 2002, May said: "It has become a classic phenomenon and one which no one will ever allow us to forget."
A run of hit singles and albums followed. Songs like We Will Rock You, Somebody to Love and We are the Champions became anthems.

Charity work

They recorded the soundtrack to the film Flash Gordon in 1980 and collaborated with David Bowie on the single Under Pressure the following year.
A memorable performance at Live Aid was generally considered to be among the highlights of the charity show.
But the band's output lessened in the late 1980s as they concentrated on other projects.
And the band suffered a huge loss when Mercury died of Aids in 1991, having battled the illness for some time.
May went on to release solo work and the rest of the band worked together sporadically.
In recent years he began to work with younger acts like Robbie Williams and the Foo Fighters.
In 2002, the remaining band members collaborated with Ben Elton on the Queen musical We Will Rock You, which continues to run in London's West End.
The same year, May played a solo on the top of Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Celebrations.
May and Taylor reformed Queen for a tour this year, with former Free singer Paul Rogers filling Mercury's shoes. Bassist Deacon has stopped playing live.
May, whose partner is former EastEnders actress Anita Dobson, is involved with many charities including Nelson Mandela's 46664 Aids awareness campaign.
He is also patron of the British Bone Marrow Donor Appeal (BBMDA).

Queen top UK album charts league

Queen have beaten The Beatles to become the most successful music act in UK album chart history, according to Guinness World Records.

The band - whose first self-titled album debuted in 1973 - have spent 1,322 weeks on the chart.
It is the first time Queen have overtaken the Fab Four in the chart, which is compiled by the Book of British Hit Singles and Albums.
Madonna, in seventh place, was the highest female artist in the list.
Queen, whose albums include A Kind of Magic, The Miracle and Innuendo, have spent 29 weeks more in the chart than the Beatles.
Elvis Presley, who earlier this year was named the most successful music act of all time by the British Hit Singles and Albums, was at number three in the album chart.
David Roberts, editor of the book of British Hit Singles and Albums, said: "Given that Queen's chart career has been much shorter than those of The Beatles and Elvis, this is an incredible achievement.
"They've long been written about with reverence in the pages of our book, and this just serves to cement their legendary status."
Queen frontman Freddie Mercury died in 1991, but the band have continued to perform.
They wind up their current 32-date European tour with former Free and Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers this week with a performance in London's Hyde Park on Friday.
Other artists in the top 10 include Irish rockers U2 at four with 1,150 weeks in the chart and Michael Jackson with 966 weeks.

Queen album brings rock to Iran
Rock band Queen, fronted by gay icon Freddie Mercury(Queen's gay frontman Freddie Mercury had Iranian ancestors), has become the first rock act to receive an official seal of approval in Iran.
Western music is strictly censored in the Islamic republic, where homosexuality is considered a crime.
But an album of Queen's greatest hits was released in Iran on Monday.
Mercury, who died in 1991, was proud of his Iranian ancestry, and illegal bootleg albums and singles made Queen one of the most popular bands in Iran.
Lyrics explained
The album contains hits such as Bohemian Rhapsody, The Miracle and I Want to Break Free, but reportedly omits a number of Queen's love songs.
The cassette, costing less than $1 (55 pence), comes complete with translated lyrics and an explanatory leaflet.
It tells Queen fans that Bohemian Rhapsody is about a young man who has accidentally killed someone and, like Faust, sold his soul to the devil.
On the night before his execution he calls God in Arabic, "Bismillah", and so regains his soul from Satan.
Akbar Safari, a salesman at a Tehran book and record store, said the album was already selling very well.
"It is the first rock album to hit the market legally and people are surprised and pleased to see it has the lyrics, not just the music," he said.
Other western acts to have had albums of selected songs released on the official Iranian market include Elton John, Julio Iglesias and The Gypsy Kings.
Books containing original and translated lyrics by many western singers have also been published in Iran, in response to the demands of a nation where 70% of the population is aged under 30.
The books contain lyrics by artists such as Leonard Cohen, Celine Dion and controversial rapper Eminem.

Queen honoured with Hollywood star
Rock band Queen have been given the rare honour of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The star, being unveiled on Friday, means that the group joins the Beatles in being become one of the few non-US acts honoured this way.
Brian May and Roger Taylor are attending the unveiling by Johnny Grant, the honorary mayor of Hollywood, in front of the Ivar nightclub on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.
Queen, whose frontman and singer Freddie Mercury died in 1991, are still setting chart records in the US.
The recently-released Queen Platinum Collection album hit the Billboard Top 100 at number 48 - making the record the highest charting compilation album in US history.
In the UK, the Platinum Collection has remained in the top 30 for 27 weeks.
The group are releasing their first DVD this week, Queen Greatest Video Hits 1.
Campaign
And the band's musical We Will Rock You, which opened in London's West End in May, is still the UK's biggest selling theatre show.
The award of a Hollywood star is the culmination of a campaign by the band's US fans.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce's board of directors receives some 300 requests every year from fan clubs and publicists - but only 15 to 20 stars are awarded.
To be given the honour, an act must have achieved fame in movies, TV, radio, music or live performance - and pay $11,000 (£7,100) for the cost of the star and dedication ceremony.
Queen's star is the 2,207th such honour made to date.
